Farewell My Baby Bird

Today (and yesterday as it was an overnight flight) my youngest flew off to Europe to be an expat in Germany.  (Her brother left 7 years ago for his career.) Now my house is empty except for me and my Papillon dog, Jasper and an aged white cat named Blue.  I will miss her, but, I’m so excited for my daughter to begin this fantastic journey!  And – I get to go visit her!!!

Here is her first impression upon reaching Paris for a layover:

“I have officially arrived in the country of love and fashion…Paris. Sitting here in the Charles de Gaulle airport I am surrounded by a multitude of nationalities and languages that I seem to not be familiar of. The smell of the airport is exactly what one would think it would smell like – lots of cologne, coffee, pastries, and people. The passenger hall, as they call it, has finally settled down and I am finally sitting down to relax for the next three hours. I had difficulty at first finding my way around this small terminal but after speaking to the help desk (twice), a nice security man who spoke no English but understood 2F and walked me to the bus, and retalking to the nice help desk man who was outside for a smoke I finally found my way to the currency exchange desk and back to my terminal.

I am very much looking forward to finally being in Germany but unfortunately I have to wait about 5+ more hours. Customs in Germany will probably take a while to get through but once that is over I will have a two hour car ride, dinner, and bed to look forward to. I am excited to meet all the people who will be in my life for the near future and to get back on a horse. I have missed riding. I am also missing all of you back home but am comforted by all the support you have given me. I am happy to report that I am not homesick yet and hoping that I will not have a terrible case of that but am nonetheless expecting it to come.

Best wishes to you all,  M”

Oh if only I were young again, I would do this too…

And this topic reminds me of a poem I read years ago in a book given to me written by Anne Bradstreet in 1659, where she compares her children to baby birds leaving the nest:

In Reference to her Children, 23 June 1659

By Anne Bradstreet

I had eight birds hatcht in one nest,
Four Cocks were there, and Hens the rest.
I nurst them up with pain and care,
No cost nor labour did I spare
Till at the last they felt their wing,
Mounted the Trees and learned to sing.
Chief of the Brood then took his flight
To Regions far and left me quite.
My mournful chirps I after send
Till he return, or I do end.
Leave not thy nest, thy Dame and Sire,
Fly back and sing amidst this Quire.
My second bird did take her flight
And with her mate flew out of sight.
Southward they both their course did bend,
And Seasons twain they there did spend,
Till after blown by Southern gales
They Norward steer’d with filled sails.
A prettier bird was no where seen,
Along the Beach, among the treen.
I have a third of colour white
On whom I plac’d no small delight,
Coupled with mate loving and true,
Hath also bid her Dame adieu.
And where Aurora first appears,
She now hath percht to spend her years.
One to the Academy flew
To chat among that learned crew.
Ambition moves still in his breast
That he might chant above the rest,
Striving for more than to do well,
That nightingales he might excell.
My fifth, whose down is yet scarce gone,
Is ‘mongst the shrubs and bushes flown
And as his wings increase in strength
On higher boughs he’ll perch at length.
My other three still with me nest
Until they’re grown, then as the rest,
Or here or there, they’ll take their flight,
As is ordain’d, so shall they light.
If birds could weep, then would my tears
Let others know what are my fears
Lest this my brood some harm should catch
And be surpris’d for want of watch
Whilst pecking corn and void of care
They fall un’wares in Fowler’s snare;
Or whilst on trees they sit and sing
Some untoward boy at them do fling,
Or whilst allur’d with bell and glass
The net be spread and caught, alas;
Or lest by Lime-twigs they be foil’d;
Or by some greedy hawks be spoil’d.
O would, my young, ye saw my breast
And knew what thoughts there sadly rest.
Great was my pain when I you bred,
Great was my care when I you fed.
Long did I keep you soft and warm
And with my wings kept off all harm.
My cares are more, and fears, than ever,
My throbs such now as ‘fore were never.
Alas, my birds, you wisdom want
Of perils you are ignorant.
Oft times in grass, on trees, in flight,
Sore accidents on you may light.
O to your safety have an eye,
So happy may you live and die.
Mean while, my days in tunes I’ll spend
Till my weak lays with me shall end.
In shady woods I’ll sit and sing
And things that past, to mind I’ll bring.
Once young and pleasant, as are you,
But former toys (no joys) adieu!
My age I will not once lament
But sing, my time so near is spent,
And from the top bough take my flight
Into a country beyond sight
Where old ones instantly grow young
And there with seraphims set song.
No seasons cold, nor storms they see
But spring lasts to eternity.
When each of you shall in your nest
Among your young ones take your rest,
In chirping languages oft them tell
You had a Dame that lov’d you well,
That did what could be done for young
And nurst you up till you were strong
And ‘fore she once would let you fly
She shew’d you joy and misery,
Taught what was good, and what was ill,
What would save life, and what would kill.
Thus gone, amongst you I may live,
And dead, yet speak and counsel give.
Farewell, my birds, farewell, adieu,
I happy am, if well with you.

Six Word Saturday – I am not but an illusion

I am not but an illusion . . .

I am not a Hollywood model.  I am not a Glamour pin up girl. I am me and not the woman in this photo…

angel-ivy-as-masked-midia-1_l

And that is all I want to be.

A happy me.

It sort of bothers me when I see women posting photos of themselves that are reproductions of models or Hollywood Glamour stars and not themselves.  Some will have hundreds of these photos saved up as profile photos.  It’s not the young women who are usually doing this, but the older women.  What does this say about a person, what does it represent?  A dissatisfaction with themselves?  A lack of self love?

It’s something to ponder.

Just be yourself and that is all that is needed to be a happier you.

Practice self love…

Chicago Chicago! – The Newberry Library

Chicago happens to be one of my most favorite cities to visit.  Along with its many sights, shopping and attractions, it is also home to one of the Midwest’s best historical &  genealogical research libraries – The Newberry Library, located at 60 West Walton Street.

Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois

If you know the layout of Chicago pretty well, you will find it on foot, by walking North to the 900 block of N Michigan Ave, turning West on Walton Street.  The Library will be on the north side of the street, across from Washington Square Park.

Or of course you can take a cab, bus, subway, bicycle or drive there.  I came upon this library when I was researching my paternal grandfather, great grandfather & great great grandfather, none of whom I ever actually met, as they died before I was born.  I had traced them to a certain county in Indiana and there I was stuck in my research, unable to proceed further back in time.  A little detective work in the county courthouse gave me a clue that my great grandmother was jilted by her young husband, who deserted her and ran off to Chicago.   My next step took me to the Newberry Library to try to find records there and sure enough, I found him there, living with another woman.  I was also able to find my great great grandfather’s death certificate there.  I was pretty excited to think that my ancestors were part of the Chicago historical fabric.  My great great grandfather & grandmother were living near where a majority of the building laborers used to live (he was a carpenter).  It is now the area near one of the major league baseball stadiums.

The Newberry Library features a Center for American History & Culture Programs, Center for American Indian Studies Programs, Center for Renaissance Studies Programs, and Center for the History of Cartography Programs.

Entry is free to all, but one can become a member of the Newberry Library by donating and participate in several activities and benefits.  They have Adult Education Seminars that relate to the Newberry collections, programs for teachers and programs for genealogists.  And near the end of July each year, there is the Annual Used Book Sale.  Just inside the building, there is a bookstore one can browse through.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Focus – Snow

This challenge gets tricky for me as I don’t have a very nice fancy camera.  I have Panasonic Lumix DC Vario, yet it has a host of settings I can use in different situations. So, I’ll give this a try and see what happens.  These two photos were taken early last March during a big snowstorm we had here.  There is a setting for ‘snowflakes’, so I was pleasantly surprised at the effect.  There’s a settings for food, mountains, fireworks, stars and so on.

The photo below was taken focusing only on the snowflakes.  March 6, 2013 006

Caesar’s Forum : Rome

If I were able to fly somewhere, anywhere in the world, this is one of the places I would visit….

momsmeanderings's avatarMom's Meanderings

Hubby and I were up and out early the next morning to make our way to the Ancient City of Rome.  First stop …. the Colosseum.   But first to marvel at the Forum of Caesar en route and alongside Via dei Fori Imperiali which leads to the Colosseum ..

Copy of IMG_4532

Julius Caesar built the first Imperial Fora  to relieve congestion in the Roman Forum when Rome’s population boomed.   “Pride of place went to a temple dedicated in 46 BC to Venus Genetrix (Venus the Ancestor – goddess of motherhood and domesticity)as Caesar claimed to be descended from the goddess.  The temple contained statues of Caesar and Cleopatra as well as of Venus, but all that remains today is a platform and three Corinthian columns.  The Forum was once enclosed by a double colonnade, under which was sheltered a row of shops.  However, this burned down in AD 80 and was rebuilt by Domitian and…

Pasta alla Norma

I have a very dear friend in Northern Italy who urged me to cook this famous dish and so last week, I finally gathered all of the ingredients (some even from my veggie garden) and prepared it for myself & my daughter.  It was a hit!  My daughter loves eggplant and she now has a new favorite recipe.

Pasta alla Norma is a hugely popular classic Catania Sicilian dish that was so loved that it was named after a 19th century opera, ‘Norma,’ written by Sicilian composer Bellini.

August 10, 2013 008

It is made with simple, yet tasty ingredients:  sliced & sauteed eggplant in extra virgin olive oil, tomatoes, fresh basil, penne pasta and ricotta salata cheese.  (I couldn’t resist adding garlic to the mix.) I was unable to find the ricotta salata cheese here, but I have been told one can use fresh ricotta or even sliced parmigiano or as I did, use mozzarella.

Boil in water, the penne pasta and drain, setting aside for when the tomato-eggplant mixture is finished.

August 10, 2013 010

Start first by preparing the eggplant, depending on what variety you use, you may need to slice it and sprinkle with salt, let it sit at least an hour and then rinse before sauteeing.  I planted a seed packet of a mix of colors and I found the white ones or pink mottled ones are very mild in flavor and don’t have that bitter taste like the darker aubergine ones.

Because I added garlic, I sauteed the garlic first in a little bit of extra virgin olive oil.  If you add onions, sautee them at this time.

Sautee the slices in a little extra virgin olive oil on both sides.  One can also prepare these on the grill – I would brush them with olive oil before placing on the grill.   Then, to the sauteed mixture, add a handful of fresh basil leaves and stir to cook.

August 10, 2013 018

Add two cans of diced Italian tomatoes to the pan..  Stir until heated and cooked thoroughly.

August 10, 2013 021

To present the dish, either on a plate or a serving bowl, arrange the penne pasta first and then cover with the tomato-eggplant mixture.  Grate or slice onto the top, the ricotta salata cheese and serve with a fresh salad (insalata mista) and sliced Italian bread.

Buon appetito!

Weekly Photo Challenge: One Shot Two Ways – Walls

I took this photo from my car on my way home from work.  I had been driving by this building almost every day and thought I should take a picture of it.  I love these old ads on historic structures and they are quickly disappearing from the urban landscape, unfortunately.

May 20, 2012 009May 20, 2012 010

Now that I look at these two, I would like to take a third, focusing in on just the ad.
